Cal-Meter for cowside determination of subclinical hypocalciemia in mature dairy cattle

Kelm is a professor of animal and food science at UW–River Falls and has been with the college since 1998. He specializes in dairy cattle science.

Kelm’s project will determine the accuracy, accessibility, and commercialization ability of Cal-Meter, a cowside meter used to determine calcium levels in cattle blood serum. After calving, serum calcium levels drop and can cause “milk fever,” which causes low body temperature, inability to stand or walk, etc., and can be detrimental to cattle health.
