    Improving udder hygiene and reducing mastitis through adoption of an automated teat preparation system at Mann Valley Farm

    This project introduces innovative automation to dairy operations at the Mann Valley Farm by implementing an advanced teat preparation system that standardizes udder hygiene before milking. The system automates washing, disinfecting, stimulating, and drying in a single step, ensuring consistent care for every cow regardless of who is milking. By using a fast-acting, cow-friendly disinfectant, the technology improves cleanliness while protecting teat health—an important factor in preventing mastitis.

    By improving consistency and reducing variability, the system supports better animal health outcomes, lowers infection rates, and enhances overall cow comfort. It also increases efficiency by reducing labor demands and streamlining the milking process. In addition, the technology provides a valuable platform for research and teaching, allowing students and researchers to study modern dairy practices, animal welfare, and precision livestock technologies. Together, these innovations help create healthier herds, improve milk quality, and advance more sustainable dairy management.

    Principal Investigator: Duane Thompson

    A lifelong farmer and agricultural professional, Thompson has owned and operated Brookview Farms in Glenwood City, Wisconsin, since 1986. With over 37 years of experience in dairy and crop production, he brings extensive knowledge in animal husbandry, agronomy, equipment maintenance, and farm management. He currently serves as the farm manager at the UW–River Falls Mann Valley Farm, supporting both educational and research initiatives. Duane holds BQA and FARM certifications, as well as a Private Pesticide Applicator license. He is a graduate of Glenwood City High School and completed the Farm Business & Production Management Program at WITC–New Richmond.
