Hartemink is chair and professor of soil science at UW–Madison. His research interests include soil mapping and soil information, digital soil mapping, soil carbon, tropical soils and tropical agriculture, soil fertility and global soil science, and soil publications and soil science history.

Hartemink’s project will utilize a a benchtop energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence EDXRF spectrometer to develop a campus-wide facility for routine analysis of heavy metals of soil, manure, feed, and dairy products for sustainable dairy production in Wisconsin. There is a lack of studies investigating the heavy metal contaminants in Wisconsin dairy farms and this equipment will help bridge this gap.
